Making and Meaning

I’m watching my best friend in the ceramic studio, working on her project. I have Hozier on in the background, currently playing “Too Sweet” via icedviennalatte’s coworking stream on Twitch. I just ate an orange and some slices of cheese, and am musing on craft and culture and ancestry.

I can only think of how lovely it is to know people work with their hands still, as I type this on my computer. I am still connecting with people over these ancient points of contact and community. I am grateful to all who came before me who dreamed of me and my life; any who endeavored to bring a better world closer to them, closer to me.

I think of how this changed. When did this change? When did the future of dreams become the fodder of the present’s powerful? When did we lay down, accept that this is the best it will ever be, and that working towards better is futile?

I wonder who else rejects that prevalent, force-fed opinion-treated-fact. If anyone before me could have envisioned this dilemma, what they would tell me, how they could guide me.

My best friend is crafting in a way that is ancient, transmitted to me through modern means. This, to me, is the way to move forward, by utilizing what we can of the past to guide us towards a brighter future that they dreamed of too.
